Curious?

I know I'm older than most in the class, I know I've lived in every area of the United States, I also know that any good dictionary supplies the phonetic breakdown of the words in the language. When growing up, from preschool through the fifth grade, a huge 10 to 12 inch thick dictionary was present in the classroom and required to be used by the students. We expanded our vocabulary and picked extra spelling words. The question becomes; why don't todays teachers review the successes of the past, research the methods, include them in best practice, and include them in the classroom.

had to share!

I love this! Many people only see the disability when they meet a child with special needs, but need to realize that there is so much more to the child than that.
I love this video. The little boy speaking amazes me! I think it is great that we have schools dedicated to teaching these kids how to communicate with methods other than ASL. http://youtu.be/XcgIbrzbKW8

Phonemic Awareness

I had a lot of fun writing our names with phonemes last class, so I decided to do a bit more research on it. This is an article I found about how important phonemic awareness is in kids. It also gives you some fun activities to perform with kids.

Introduction

Hi my name is Sarah Grace. I am a special education major, with a certificate in  5-9 sciences. I am very excited about taking this course. I changed my major this year from nuclear engineering when I discovered that I really enjoy teaching. I teach children to show dogs, which is my other love. I have showed dogs since I was 4. Now, I want to take my love for teaching into a classroom.

Movies featuring Autism

http://www.autism.com/fam_autism_in_movies.asp

list of movies involving autism (for all the movie buffs like me!)

I just think that if you watch movies involving the very "disorders" (I quote that because I just really do not like that word) then you really can deepen your understanding of what life is like for the people who have them. Plus, movies just sort of make my day. haha! :)

The King's Speech

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=the+king%27s+speech+trailer&view=detail&mid=EE4F427F0594442FD60FEE4F427F0594442FD60F&first=0&qpvt=the+king%27s+speech+trailer

So I basically looked up language and communication disorders in the movies, and I came across this one: "The King's Speech". Now, I hope I'm not going to get into trouble for this, but since we are college kids, I felt it shouldn't be too big of a deal. This movie is rated "R" but I think it's for language use and violence. However, it's based on the true story of a man with a stammer who was a real world leader in England. It stars Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush,  Helen Bonham Carter, and other really big names in Hollywood. Plus, it just looks like an excellent movie. I really think it would be worth checking out.

This morning I awoke to a beautiful view of the city and then enjoyed a LONG day of meetings where we discussed the benefits of expaneded learning opportunities, innovation, learning outside the traditional school day and finally the highlight hearing a former professor from the Harvard School of Education who is now a professor in Hong Kong speak on "The Learning Children Deserve"

How would you handle the situation?

I know we talked about this during class, but i also know that some of you are like me and would rather not speak out on a subject in class you do not fully understand. However, we all should have a better understanding of speech, voice, languauge, and communication now. So, my question is: If you are struggling understanding a child in the classroom, how would you confront their parents/guardian about the situation?

No class Monday night

So I really like this class but I'm glad we don't have class on Monday. I don't like having class at night. Anyone else feel the same way?

Five theories of language acquisition

In this chapter it discussed the five theories of language acquisition. Behavioral, is language learned through imitation. Linguistic, is inborn ability for language. Semantic-Cognitive, meaning precedes structure, same utterance can have multiple meanings or cognition precedes language. Pragmatic- Interactionist, the need to communicate precedes language structures. Information Processing, is where language structures emerge from commutative functions, individual matches form to function.

Language Acquisition

In this chapter we can see how the physiological, cognitive and social foundations of language acquisition are used in language. I was amazed with all the things that have to take place in order to produce speech. If there are any part of the process that is interrupted, this can cause problems and disorders.

The Elements of Language

In this chapter we learned five elements of language. Phonology, the first of the form elements of language, is the study of the sound system of language. Morphology, is the study of words and how they are formed. Syntax, is the study of the rules that govern how words are put together to make phrases and sentences. Semantics, is the study of the meaning of words. Pragmatics is the use of language for communication, they include the study of the rules that govern the use of language for social interaction.

Language and Language Disorders

I thought this chapter was very helpful in differentiating the difference between speech, language and communication as well as voice. Speech can be defined as producing sounds that are used in language. Language can be possible without speech, language is the expression of human communication through which knowledge, belief and behavior can be shared. Communication can be defined as the process participants use to exchange information, needs, ideas and desires. Voice is the sound produced by humans and is not always produced as speech.
Hope Everyone had a great weekend! :)
