Language and Language Disorders

I thought this chapter was very helpful in differentiating the difference between speech, language and communication as well as voice. Speech can be defined as producing sounds that are used in language. Language can be possible without speech, language is the expression of human communication through which knowledge, belief and behavior can be shared. Communication can be defined as the process participants use to exchange information, needs, ideas and desires. Voice is the sound produced by humans and is not always produced as speech.

  1. I agree about finding this chapter helpful. I had no idea that speech, language, communication, and voice could be so different.

  2. Yes, I agree with both of you. I had never really given much thought to the different meanings these words held and this chapter, and the discussion in class, was very helpful in understanding the differences. Now I know if I ever have to confront a situation with a child and his/her speaking abilities, I should look at if it is a speech, language, or communication problem before doing something about it.

  3. I also, thought this chapter was very helpful. Without this i would have thought that if i had a trouble understanding a child, that it would ultimately be a speech problem, however i understand know there is different forms of communication problems. Wether it be speech problems, or just the a communication problem.

  4. I agree as well. Before this chapter I would have never known the difference between speech and voice. I always considered them to be the same thing. I liked how in class we had to think critically about the difference and similarities. I also liked doing the activity with our names.

  5. I agree with you. You have to look at all three for every student. This will help them to maximize their ability to understand the lesson. Each has an effect on their ability to communicate with you and others in the classroom.
