Visual Phonics

I am a deaf education major, and I am mentoring in a deaf education classroom. I met a young girl who is truly inspiring. She got cochlear implants when she was four and she did not learn sign nor how to vocalize herself till attending elementary school. Since I've been mentoring her classroom and working with her I've learned a great deal about visual phonics and the signs that have been introduced to show syllables. It is an amazing thing! It's showing me exactly why I chose this field. She said patio for the first time perfectly last Thursday, and her teacher and I did a little dance for her. (:

  1. That's amazing! I love hearing stories like this! It's moments like that that make teaching worth every good and bad day that you may encounter!

  3. That is so wonderful to hear! I was in a classroom the other day, that totally over whelmed me in a negative way. The regular classroom teacher was out for leave and a new teacher that had no background education of special education was filling in for her. Each child was paired up with an aide, but the aide has no clue as far as direction for the child. The teacher has no idea how to help the children in her classroom, and I just at that point did not know what to say myself. The children were all wonderful children with such excitement about them, but had no guiding of any sorts. They were basically just left on their own. I am so inspired to know that there are individuals out there that can help to make such a remarkable difference in the life of a child.
