Pragmatics Help

So, I'm still a little bit confused. When I looked over my sample after class and was going through the checklist I got confused. Can anyone tell me the difference between specifying topic and responding to request for clarification? They seem like the same thing to me.

Thanks!

  1. Specifying topic is when the child STARTS talking about a topic such as what he did that day at school or begins telling you about his favorite tv show, friend or food. The child is the FIRST to start the topic - he SPECIFIES it.

Responding to request for clarification is when the child said something which was not understood, the other person said, "What?" or "Huh?" or "Did you say, ...." or asks about what the child said. When the child RESPONDS TO THAT REQUEST FOR CLARIFICATION because the other person didn't understand the initial remark the child is demonstrating this skill. They know how to go back and restate or paraphrase or provide more information to clarifying what they said.
